Kid's Room Decorating Tips
There's was a very interesting discussion recently in an online forum. A mother asked, "How do I decorate a bedroom that will be used by both a boy and a girl?
.........Forum participants had some interesting answers and here are a few of them. They might give you some decorating ideas:
1. How about bugs? A bug theme in yellow and green. Or, you can do a lot with aquatic ideas. Fish, sea life in blues and greens.
2. My first thought was greens and yellows, maybe even purple. Why don't you ask your three year old?
She might have some good ideas of what they may like and their younger sibling might like. She will also enjoy being included.
3. Bugs, bears, fish, cats and dogs - animals can be a good unisex idea.
My mom decorated my room in brown bears when she didn't know if I was going to be a boy or a girl. You could try to divide the room up in some way.
Give each child their own space in which to feel at home. At the same time, try to incorporate some kind of unity in design.
4. A Disney Theme transcends all gender. Just make sure you put a villain for every princess.
5. I don't know you budget, but we purchased our children's bedding at Pottery Barn Kids. My son (1) & daughter (4) share a room & PB kids has a really cute line of striped & patch quilts in primary colors.
We got the striped quilts. My daughter & son's are almost identical except my son's has red stripes where my daughter's has pink. They really like them.

I have a few butterflies that hang from the ceiling above my daughter's bed & birds over my son's. It looks good and best of all my little girl was very happy with it.
6. Use anything BUT pink or blue.
7. Bugs, (lady bugs dragon flies, butterflies) or ponies, teddy bears, Sesame St. Characters, Disney.
8. I saw this really cute bedroom on a home decorating channel. It was shared by a boy and girl. It had sail boats with little boys and girls on them. The sail boat's sails were red with hearts.
The boats were blue. If you don't like that idea there's also teddy bears, I found this really cute teddy bear picnic wallpaper border that was purple and blue. My last idea is bugs and butterflies!
9. Well, I painted my twin girl's nursery a sage green, white chair rail, light yellow. I did not want the typical pink for my girls; because I thought the color pink would go with either green or yellow.
10. Rainbows, hills, cars and bikes and animals on the hill - this was a mural on the wall of a house we bought. Tie dye, nature, color themes.
11. Animals are great!! Farm animals or zoo animals are common in both boy's rooms and girl's rooms. You could go for Winnie the Pooh characters.
12. I did an ocean theme. Another idea is a space theme with the stars and planets.
As you can see, bugs and animals seemed to be the most popular ideas. I thought the suggestion that you ask you children for ideas was brilliant.
Why not find a book or magazine on children's room decor at your local library. Page through the book with your kids and talk about how the rooms are decorated. That should give you some great ideas for creating rooms everyone will love.
